Ageing & Staining Paper for Journals

A little how-to video on ageing (tea-staining) and staining paper with dye, the first video created for our YouTube account. Enjoy!

60th Wedding Anniversary Journal

One of my favourite projects completed in 2014;
a 60th Wedding Anniversary journal for Mum and Dad's
celebration in October.

I always lay out the pieces, trying several different positions
before everything comes together in a way that feels right.
The orange and yellow embroidery is a piece that Mum worked on
over fifty years ago!

Needed the floor space for organising page layouts.
Thanks, Samantha Lane Art for your inspiration
on page decoration :)

Family photos were combined with Mum and Dad's life story,
told in the 'Fairy Tale' genre.

In my stash of fabrics and braids, I found complimentary
colours for the inside cover and book tie. The hand torn edges
of each page are completed by the raw edges of the cover.

Two Linen Journals

I recently made two journals with some vintage linen fabric, one coptic stitch and the other long stitch. One of the pieces of fabric was quite plain so I stained it with tea. When I pressed it with a hot iron some interesting colour changes and marks happened. When I made the cover, I took the fabric right to the edge but not right around, so it has a lovely raw border. The other piece of linen fabric had a beautiful, symmetrical floral print that looked great without staining, so I let it be. The tea stained journal will be listed in our Etsy store soon.

The inside cover of this journal is lined with a vintage inspired map
showing parts of North America, Europe and Africa.
The journal could make a nice bon voyage gift!

Kraft paper pages, I love torn edges!
And now for the second journal ...

Those torn edges again!
The hot pink/red paper is by Zizania Paper Products and it is GORGEOUS.

^^ Magic happened when I decided to drop pigment
ink onto the pages while they were still wet with tea!

Art Journal Swap Complete!

For the past year I've been involved in an art journal swap organised by Robin Sparrow Books. We each chose the theme for our own journals and once a month sent out one of our journal pages (A5, folded, paper of our choice) to another participant to decorate. So we each had one page a month to decorate and in return a page was decorated, embellished, illustrated or painted for us. Here are the pages I decorated for others. In my next post I'll share the book I created with the pages made for me!

11. Trees for Elizabeth

10. Four Seasons for Roselda

9. Magnolia for Shuna

8. Once upon a time for Milly

7. Growth for Rose

The Blue Book

For the better part of a few days I experimented with some mixed media techniques I used for a book back in February. This time I repurposed a cover of the book A Pocketful of Years which seemed like a great title for a journal that could possibly contain memoirs, or serve as a guestbook or wedding book. For now I'm just calling it the blue book. It was fun tea staining paper, lace and other ephemera to embellish the torn edge pages. I'm also really pleased with the buttons, charms and ribbons I found for the cover, which are a mixture of modern and vintage pieces.
